|
|
The two instances of the Beatles "borrowing" lyrics that I usually hear about are:
1)"Run For Your Life" - "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man" which is from Elvis Presley's "Baby Let's Play House"
2)"Come Together" - "Here come old flat top" which is from Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me" (in addition to using the line, the songs also sound very much alike)
However, the lyrics that made me think of this topic are "With your long blonde hair and your eyes of blue."
The line is used in "Sorrow" by the Merseys (covered later by David Bowie). When I first heard the Merseys' song, I thought: hey, they took that from George's "It's All Too Much." Then I found out that "Sorrow" came out first, and it was George who borrowed the lyrics.
Here's a video of "Sorrow" by the Merseys

Are there any other instances of the Beatles borrowing lyrics?

"Golden Slumbers" was based off a Thomas Dekker poem- some lines are the same, some were reworked by Paul. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/chrisgavito |

Yeah, I already knew about Paul reworking that one. |

The only one I can think of is "Something" and the song "Something In The Way She Moves" by James Taylor. It's only one line though. I've read a magazine that referred to The Beatles' "Something" as "Something In The Way She Moves". It annoyed me a bit. _________________ Old avatars: http://su.pr/29WdxA, http://su.pr/2H8fGf
"And if you love your life, everybody will love you too." - Paul, from the song "Simple As That" |

John and George sing "Frère Jacques" in "Paperback Writer."
I could be wrong but I've always felt that the line from "Please Please Me," "But you know there's always rain in my heart," was an homage to Buddy Holly's song, "Raining In My Heart."
Don't think there are very many exact matches at all really... just a few and then some others which could be traced back to previous lyrics. |

I remember hearing an Lennon interview long ago where
John said something like he and Paul were the biggest "thieves"
when it comes to some of the stuff they've written.
It doesn't really bother me, artists often borrow off of each
other. _________________ Sitting in the stand of the sports arena

| Not really exactly what you want, but George's "I'd Have You Anytime" has the lyric "Let me roll it to you," which might have been the inspiration for Paul's song. |

Take it easy there.
To clarify, it slipped my mind when I listed the other songs - you reminded me that I already knew it. So, thanks for the reminder.
Sorry I didn't say that in the first reply. _________________

I think it's funny that you mentioned it because I was just listening to "Raining In My Heart" by Buddy Holly. That's an interesting thought - the line may have been a nod to Holly, you never know. _________________
